Right, so there's a Merlin Big Bang Challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic (15000-35000 word fic before July).

I am SO tempted, especially since that's a realistic timeframe (and after March I'm working on my dissertation so have much more control over how I organise my time).

Now, the question is:

Shall I have a go at writing my currently pretty neglected Epic Fic (the one I've been on about for ages and you haven't actually seen any serious evidence of it) for the challenge OR will I get myself into all sorts of tangles doing that (since I have clearly overthought this fic into oblivion) and pick a straightforward and fun scenario to write for the challenge and run with it?

This is me musing, rather than a poll or anything, but I'd love comments and opinions.

(Note: My Epic Fic is currently organised in to three parts - it's essentially a trilogy. The challenge stipulates it must be a complete fic, so I would probably have to write all three parts - which would be significantly over 35k)

So, a while back [livejournal.com profile] thisissirius and I started talking about doing a Merlin CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE fic.

This is a fic with multiple possible plot lines and endings depending on the choices that the reader makes.

If you are interested in being involved in this project then read more HERE

So are they intending to make every single book I read as a child into a film? I mean, why would they do that? Why?

This time I am referring to Moonacre, but it applies to so many other things too. Shall we list them? His Dark Materials, the Dark is Rising, Narnia...

No, we shouldn't list them, it gets too annoying. And I get too sad.

Pretend this is a poll (I don't have a complicated account which will allow me to post a poll. Poor student and dislike of adverts, you see)

Question: Would you be willing to read a fic with some Arthur/Morgana early on with the revelation (much later on) that Igraine was also Morgana's mother? (PS, the fic is not Arthur/Morgana overall)

Basically, on a scale of 1-10, how squicked would you be by reading this?

1 being "Hey, it's from the legends, sure, whatever" and 10 being "clicking away instantly and never reading anything you write ever again".

I know that there are people on my flist (especially in other fandoms) who aren't bothered at all by this kind of idea, and I suspect that my flist doesn't have a huge number of people likely to run screaming, but I'd like reactions all the same, before I explore this in a potentially less friendly environment.

It's taken me more than 2000 words to write out a summary of the fic I'm trying to write. I'm screwed.

Beta meta

There's a post here (re original fiction, but I think it applies to fanfic too) about beta readers and what you look for when someone is betaing.

This is something I was thinking about the other day, when betaing for [livejournal.com profile] abbyleaf101 (and have also raised with [livejournal.com profile] fortassetu, back a long time ago).

It made me want to ask what your thoughts are? Especially those of you for whom I have/do beta, or vice versa.

[livejournal.com profile] angiepen, for example, I know you don't really like betas at all as a process. Would you care to comment on that?

Personally I think what I want from a beta depends on how emotionally invested I am in a fic. Fics I consider unimportant I just want to iron out errors and often I don't have them betad at all. Fics I care about, fics I want to be good, I would love a beta to discuss and rip apart and make me make them the best I possibly can.

And yet, it's hard for me to admit that. Because in my heart of hearts I think all things I write should be the latter, not the former. But I don't have the energy to pour that much effort and emotion into everything I write. Some of them are just for fun.

So, I guess I wonder what you think about that, too.

So if I were, hypothetically, to be writing Merlin RPS fic *GASP* *CLUTCH CRUCIFIX AND COWER* *FLAMING TORCHES* would there be anyone on my flist willing to beta?
aleathiel: (Default)
So did anyone ever write The Doctor/Jethro?
aleathiel: (Arthur smirk openskiles)
I have posted my Merlin fics to the Merlin Fanfiction Archive.

The archive is languishing rather neglected, which is quite sad given the hugely great and varied number of fics on LJ.

It turns out I've written thirteen fics in this fandom so far. That surprises me!

ROFL! It turns out that 13 fics makes me the most prolific author. I've never been the most prolific author at anything in my life! And here I am thinking I haven't posted any fic for ages...

From [livejournal.com profile] fortassetu

To the first five people who comment to this post, I will gift you with something of my own crafting. ;) It may be an icon, a manip, a drawing, a ficlet, or something completely random. You may love it or you may think it sucks, but regardless, it will be made with love for you from me. ;) Feel free to give me a hint of what you might like (ship, character, actor/actress, fandom, colour, etc.)

The catch? You must pay it forward and post this in your journal so you can gift 5 of your friends with special gifts made by you.

Folks, let's be honest and admit that I'm not going to be able to do manip/drawing (unless you want a comedy drawing in paint) so you'll be getting something in words... other than that I'm good.

EDIT: why do I do this? I just said in the post below that I must not get sidetracked onto shiny things. *shrugs* I have no willpower.

Hi, darling Flist...

I seem to recall that several of you volunteered (fools!) to be sounding boards/readers/betas for the Epic Fic of Doom. It's going very slowly, but I'm going to have a first chunk done this week and I'd love for someone to agree to have a look at it (at this stage it really doesn't have to be a proper beta) and let me explain at you where I'm thinking it's going.

Just for info: it's the first of a trilogy which runs pretty much up to and through Arthur's reign. Obviously I'm intending to incoporate bits of the legend. It's Merlin/Arthur overall, but has various pairings along the way (in this one, most noticeably Merlin/Morgana/Arthur). It also will contain NC17 scenes (het and slash) so please don't volunteer if that makes you uncomfortable.

If you are willing to be a volunteer/victim please leave me a comment or email me at aleathiel@gmail.com

PS. Even if you aren't volunteering please nag me about this fic. I'm good at starting long fics and then getting distracted by pretty shiny other ideas along the way...

YES!

The portfolio of doom has been submitted!

This is a good time for you to leave leave me a fic prompt because now I can write again!
aleathiel: (Arthur smirk openskiles)
You know how when you absolutely have to do something you fill your brain with other things you'd rather be doing?

I am NOT allowing myself to write fic until I've done this stupid portfolio thing, which is MOSTLY done and due on Monday.

Then I MUST write the three fics I have unfinished. Because I'm being lazy about them.

And then there is the epic fic, which really isn't very epic yet. It has epic quantities of notes and ideas, but not an epic wordcount.

BUT.

I AM SUDDENLY OVERCOME WITH DESIRE TO WRITE A MERLIN WHODUNNIT. Two laundry maids have been killed in gruesome ways and it's up to Prince Arthur and his trusty manservant to solve the mystery...

Oh God, you can tell my work is going badly: I've posted three times today.
aleathiel: (fairy treehugger)
Today was not a good day. The assignment still isn't finished, and it's still the worst thing I've ever written in my academic career and I have no idea how to improve it.

So I will focus on the good things about today.

[livejournal.com profile] angiepen posted a new chapter of A Lost Boy (which is now epic and novel length, yay ANGIE!)

AND

[livejournal.com profile] franticsga posted a new chapter of Be resigned which is utterly fabulous.

PROMPT POST

aleathiel: (protect you openskies)
I have to hand this assignment in on Monday and it is possibly the most boring thing that I have ever written. I am not writing fic at the moment, because I am supposed to be doing this instead, however, I would like to have some fic to plan.

So: MERLIN FIC PROMPT POST

follow the linky to my sticky post
aleathiel: (Arthur smirk openskiles)
So, I did in fact write a Christmas-themed Merlin fic, but since it was a gift in [livejournal.com profile] merlin_the_elf I couldn't admit it was mine until the reveal. (original posting)

For [livejournal.com profile] fortassetu

Title: Midwinter
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Rating: PG13
Wordcount: approx 5500
Summary: Merlin needs a Midwinter gift for Arthur. Arthur needs a Midwinter gift for Merlin.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eldanna for reminding me that writing fluffy fics at Christmas is completely acceptable :P

Winter was drawing in and the nights were shortening )

I think I might spend the rest of the evening curled up with my laptop in bed reading everything I fancy from Yuletide.

YAY for obscure fandoms!

Yuletide vid!. Possibly the best vid I've ever seen. Fantastic! ALL FANDOMS EVER.
aleathiel: (fairy treehugger)
Euterpe award

My [livejournal.com profile] tamingthemuse award for my 12 week run. I didn't write this week, so if I start again I start back on one.

Time to get the things on the list done *points to previous post* and work on my Epic Fic for a bit.
aleathiel: (fairy treehugger)
Because it is more interesting than studying, and because I am running out of displacement activities and means of procrastination, I am writing a summary of what I'm working on, so as to have a clean slate:

1. The rest of For Fertility

2. [livejournal.com profile] miniminkie's Gaius/Gwen (yes, you did read that right. I can be talked into anything :P) Done

3. Truth or Dare RPS

4. The GIANT FIC O'DOOM (my epic Merlin fic)

Have I forgotten anything? Have I promised anyone that I'd write something and not done it?

Once #1 - #3 above are done I will be posting a place for prompts and suggestions for short(er) things to work on alongside #4. Watch this space if there's something you're dying to get me to write.
