Right, I have a challenge for you all: write a drabble using the things you ignore, or even actively avoid, in the fandom. Post them (or links) here. (AU? RPS? a particular pairing? or characterisation? What don't you like?)

I'll start you off with a combination of two of my personal dislikes: mpreg and wingfic.

By eight months Orlando’s wings could not sustain his weight. His swollen stomach pulled at his spine and made his shoulders sink, his wings hanging listlessly, feathers trailing behind him in the dust as he walked. It was too much effort to try and lift them.

Exhaustion overwhelmed him and drained the smiles from his face as he curled in on himself, every fibre concentrating on the burgeoning life inside him, counting down the moments until birth.

Through his isolation, light shone in Orlando’s eyes when he reminded himself it was Viggo’s child that kept him pinioned to the ground.

What is the appeal of mpreg and wingfic anyway?

*dies laughing*

I don't think any attempt of mine to write a mpreg/wingfic drabble would be any better than this. :)

I have no idea. I'm not fans of either, as you can tell.

I'm interested to know what other people's dislikes are though.

Go on...have a go!

Wing!fic I don't mind too much. I played in RPG for the longest time where I was Dominic, a mortal, and his lover Billy was a faerie. So in that aspect ... I guess it doesn't bother so much because he had wings for a reason.

But mpreg fics bother me. They always completely girlafy whoever the pregnant one is.

Really bad death!fics. Some I will read ... others I won't. It takes a really good writer to deal with that topic, and I can honestly say that most haven't pulled it off.

And DomLijah. Not a big fan of it. Maybe because of the whole "tinhat" thing, but I very rarely read ANYTHING DomLijah.

Thus ends my rant.

14 DAYS! :D

Exactly. And doesnt that defeat the object of reading slash in the first place?

I don't read Domlijah either. Just doesn't interest me. I like Elijah in other pairings, and indivdually or all together I like the hobbits, but I don't like hobbit pairings.

14 DAYS!

Interesting. At a workshop I attended, we were challenged (well, assigned *g*) to write a story about the most despicable character we could think of, someone whose ideals or actions made our blood boil, write the story from that person's point of view, and make that character sympathetic. It was a hell of a challenge. Your challenge reminds me of that.

You did remarkably well with your drabble.

It is difficult. Makes you try to analyse what it is you don't like. Which is always a good things.
Did you succeed?

Well, I did write the story and I did give my character a reason for doing what she did. I don't know how successful I was in making her sympathetic, but it certainly was an interesting exercise in putting yourself in the head of someone you wouldn't have thought you could understand.

Well that's enough of a reason to do it then, in my opinion. I use my fics as a chance to try things out. Use of mixed up tenses, for example. Things I think I'd be afraid to try in origfic if I hadnt done them successfully here first.

I am in a minority here but I like it. I am a fan of both mpreg and wingfic and I think you did very well. If you feel like writing more I'll read it.

:) well thanks! I'm not a fan, but neither am I narrow minded. Which was why I wanted to try. Everything deserves it's chance. And it now appears I might end up writing mpreg. Maybe wingfic is next...

LOL...totally a sign of a good writer, because this was amazingly good, despite the insane subject matter...I actually really felt for poor sweet Orlando!! Go you!!

I've never read wing!fic...I guess it wouldn't bother me necessarily, but it's not something I'm gonna look for. Mpreg I'm just not interested in. Don't see the point really...I don't find it funny and I sure don't find it sexy.

Mary Sue's make my skin crawl, and I don't mean het--I read het, and it can even have an OFC in it--there's a diff between a well-done female character we all know we'd like to be...hee...and an all-out horrific Mary Sue. Sometimes writers Mary Sue through one of the boys, and that's almost as bad...argh!

Viggo sounding like he's 16 will get me away from a fic faster than you can say "I love you, Angel"--which is another one of those things that soooo doesn't work for me, especially if it's used in *every* line of dialogue...ugh. Same with "baby"...and I'm really not against endearments, they can be sweet or sexy; it's just that they always seem to be completely over-used and it makes the boys sound like 6 year olds playing with dolls or something...argh.

And Sean Astin. I like him, think he's an amazing actor, think he's attractive, but he's very straight and it actually squicks me to think of him paired with any of the boys!! Sam/Frodo I guess I can see but I still don't want to go there....heee.

There's actually more, I'm sure, but those are some of the biggies I avoid!! I do have a threesome insane!fic that goes crazy with the nickname thing, so maybe I should try finishing that one already! :P

Mary-Sues I agree with everything you say. I don't necessarily have anything against OCs, but I'm wary of them (have you read the Perchance Arc.? Best OFC I've ever read. Links in my memories if you haven't)

Instant declarations of love I hate. Endearments are fine in moderations, but not when they seem out of character. But Viggo declaring his undying love of Orlando after knwoing him for two days just irritates me.

Sean? No strong feelings. With the exception of Elijah in some pairings, the hobbits in pairings don't interest me. I love them indivdually or as a group. But have no desire to read any of them paired up.

I'd...never heard of wingfic. It's weird. @_@

That was good, for such an unappealing subject. I think I'll try me hand at it. :)

I don't know if wingfic is particular to lotrips - I've not seen it anywhere else, but then I've not looked. It's a bit weird!

I think I'll try me hand at it.
*cheers*

Just the first line of the drabble floored me with laughter.

That is one fantastic drabble! It is only five sentences long, but has a beginning, middle and end.

Superb.

To bizzare for words, isn't it?

Superb
