At the risk of sounding like an ignorant American, can you please explain to me what "punting" is and why he's standing on a boat? When you first mentioned it I assumed that it was just some weird version of football rugby or something, but this water thing totally perplexes me...
Punts are flat-bottomed boats (have you seen pictures of Venice?). They are propelled along by a person standing on a little platform with a long pole. They use the pole to push off the river bed. It's a slow way of moving, and the steering gets very dodgy. It's a bit of a Cambridge (and Oxford) thing. In Oxford the boat faces the other direction because they're weird.
