Well, considering the legal age is somewhat higher over there than it is here, I can't comment having never had the experience to compare. But yeah, when we do occasionally get the sun, the pubs are even more of a good thing than usual.

quite aside from the fact it shows my complete inability to punt well, i really like the photo. it just needs a title like 'solitude', or 'butterflies', and a well-known critic to say it "raises fundamental questions about global warming" or "touches on the growing issue of racism" and it could make a lot of money :D.

At the risk of sounding like an ignorant American, can you please explain to me what "punting" is and why he's standing on a boat? When you first mentioned it I assumed that it was just some weird version of football rugby or something, but this water thing totally perplexes me...

Punts are flat-bottomed boats (have you seen pictures of Venice?). They are propelled along by a person standing on a little platform with a long pole. They use the pole to push off the river bed. It's a slow way of moving, and the steering gets very dodgy. It's a bit of a Cambridge (and Oxford) thing. In Oxford the boat faces the other direction because they're weird.

Wow - you had paddles in your punt? *is envious* Last time this happened to me and a couple of friends, we were beyond the bend leading to Grantchester, so no passers-by, and had no paddles.
Luckily, there was a gentleman with us, who volunteered his outfit to the gods of water and swam back for the pole...

Yeah, we had one little paddle - took a while to get back! And as you can see we were only as far as the Anchor. We lost it again further up towards Granchester, but the current helped it back towards us, which was lucky! I wasn't about to swim for it!
