My dear Razzle, I've just had a call saying I might have to do a shift at work tonight which I can't verify because the wanker who ought to be able to tell me isn't answering his phone. If I do have to, then I won't have a chance to finish your birthday presents (because, what the hell, I decided to write both options) tonight. As it is, I'm going to have to get ready to go out in half an hour unless I hear otherwise.

That said, it might be a false alarm and I might be sitting her posting in an hour or so.

edit:
AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA night off. Expect fic soooooon.

Help! I'm trying to write my [livejournal.com profile] vo_xmas fic, but it's been so long since I wrote Viggo and Orlando.

Please spam me with your favourite fics in terms of characterisation so that I can remember how I write my Viggo and my Orlando and don't make them two random characters who happen to have those names.

Preferably not AU, but I don't mind too much.

YAY!

I'm actually going to put this fic on hold now even though it's not finished, both because I have a couple of other things demanding attention, and because I'd like to actually have a chance to think about it and how I want to progress with it.

Simple things...

We were doing 'the weather' in my Spanish class this evening. And, pretty much at random, the teacher picked Vigo as a location to discuss. Yes, very silly, but it did amuse me to get to say Vigo continuously throughout the class.

Also. I just booked tickets to go see Ian McKellan as King Lear in June. YAY!

Dear My real name

As you may know, the award-winning author Philip Pullman, who is an honorary member of University where my Dad works, will be delivering a Public Lecture here on Friday, 10th November at 6pm in the Main Arts Lecture Theatre.

The title of the lecture is Strangeness and Charm. These are terms in particle phyics, and he intends to examine the 'fundamental particles of narrative' and how they interact with one another and the reader.

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the lecture, but also to the Reception Meal with Philip Pullman afterwards in the Terrace Bar.

Please respond... blah blah...Yours sincerely... blah blah blah

YAY!

[livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow, want me to take notes? I thought the lecture sounded just like something you'd be interested in.

I'm begging for your mercy. Today, my boss has left a bunch of incredibly dull and incredibly unimportant spreadsheets for me to sort. It's boring, time consuming and riddiculously pointless because he's NEVER going to look at them.

So, please cheer me up. Entertain me.

A question for my Nano fic - Do Americans/Australians etc call what a guy would wear to a Black Tie event (ie a prom) a Dinner Jacket like British people?

The fic's set in the UK, so that's what the character is going to call it. But I just want to check that people in other countries would know what I'm talking about.

My second cat came home today. He's been gone about eight months and we had given up any hope that he was alive or that we'd see him again. He seems completely healthy, although he's lost his collar.

I have created [livejournal.com profile] alea_nano (wildly original, I know!) for my Nano novel. The entries will be friends locked, so please comment here or on the journal itself to be added.

I don't currently have an icon and given I know nothing about graphics it might well stay that way unless someone is kind enough to send me/point me in the direction of one I like.

Okay, two days before I have to start writing, I'm having a bit of a re-think of my plans for my Nano novel.

Basically, I have to choose between the two plot outlines below. They're completely different types of novel and I'm not sure in which direction I'm currently leaning.

1.
As yet untitled. Parallel stories about a youth called Gareth, one being his first term at university, the other being his last Christmas vacation before his finals. It's about his family, his friends, his future. And yes, there are more than a few skeletons in the closet. I want to write this one because it's new and fresh, I've only begun thinking about it in the last couple of weeks. It's more personal, more realistic (obviously) than the other outline. But, it's underdeveloped, I'm not quite sure what it's trying to say and I'm worried about running out of plot because it isn't a plot-based narrative and I'm not sure how well I can sustain it under the write-every-day pressure of Nano. However it's probably the better of the two novels.

2.
Lighter hearted and less 'literary' than the above. This is the story of two characters, Raffael and Morgan, who I've had in my head for ages. It's basically a futuristic whodunnit, but not entirely futuristic in the laser guns and space stations way, it's set on a world afflicted by the changes of global warming and the affect that's had on the earth and it's people. It's plot driven and a little bit silly, which I suspect would make it an easier Nano project than a more serious novel. But, and it's a giant but, there are huge gaps in the plot. I don't really know what happens after about the first quarter of the outline.

So, what do you think? Which outline do I spend two days beating into shape to start writing on Wednesday?

I went to see the film The History Boys last night and really enjoyed it. I thought it was intelligent and thought provoking as well as entertaining. I have to admit that it made me really glad that I didn't have to do a whole extra term with my Cambridge application, but I thought the issues of the different ways of addressing teaching, and the purpose of exams in education was beautifully done and very recognisibly things I've experienced.

And of course, I loved seeing my college on the big screen (for anyone who wants to know: the sundial and the ornate window in the montage and then the court with the cloister and the half timbered building that the boys walked through were all things I walked past/through many times a day).

Has anyone else seen the film and do you have any thoughts on it? I have two friends who saw the play and while they liked the film they didn't think it was as good as the play. Certainly I thought the film felt like a play being filmed (not that it didn't work, but it was very static and there were clear scenes). What did you think?

EDIT: I didn't mean to ignore the issues of sexuality and pederasty that arise in the film. Obviously without them it would have been a different, and less interesting, film.

I don't know if anyone ever actually reads this journal any more since I've not exactly been updating regularly, but meh, it's my journal so I am going to still post. Drop in and say Hi if are actually vaguely still reading.

On which note, I'm going to start an LJ for my Nanowrimo as soon as I've come up with a title - yes I know I'm running close to the wire here - so leave a comment if you want to be added on that journal. I'll post again when it's up and running and you can comment there if you'd prefer.

Anyway, recently I've not been in the fandom much, but I've been reading orginial fic slash. So I'm generating a list below of recs. Please feel free to comment with recs of your own.

recs below the cut )

Okay, so, off the top of my head those are my recommendations. I'll add more as I remember/come across them.

Yup, I'm mad. I haven't been on LJ for ages and I haven't written anything for longer than that. But I've decided that however busy I am I need to find time to write and that this year, with no exams looming on the horizon for the first time in about seven years, I'm going to take the plunge.

So I've signed up to Nanowrimo. I will make the time. :)

Title: The Shadow of Camlann
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aleathiel
Fandom: King Arthur (of the medieval revival of the Romances rather than the recent film - although, to be honest, it owes much to Rosemary Sutcliff)
Rating: PG13
Pairing: Arthur/Gawain (with Arthur/Guinevere and Guinevere/Lancelot)
Summary: Gawain tries to prevent Camlann.
A/N: Yes I have played with timelines, fates and relative ages. Who hasn't?

Yes, I am officially rubbish. I've been too busy running around having an RL to be online. Now it's really hard to get back to it because I don't know what you've been up to, how everyone is or what anyone's writing.

I'm really not gone. I have been trying to read my flist - although I know I'm not keeping up because you all write so much! I am also writing - I am going to make the deadline for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_deja_vu and then I'll see what happens after that...
aleathiel: (Default)
Am all graduated! There is now a BA Hons Cantab after my name!

Also, am going to Paris and won't be back until next Thursday. Have a great week everyone.

To Do:

Not necessarily in this order.

1. Read [livejournal.com profile] perseph2hades's new Secret Service fics which I denied myself when studying.

2. Write fic for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_deja_vu (go take a peek folks, its such a great idea)

3. Write some Renly Baratheon/Loras Tyrell from George Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice. The series hints rather blatantly but doesn't look like it's going to develop. Grr. (Probably not for #2 however, since it's quite obscure, I have no idea if anyone on my flist would be remotely interesting in reading it anyway, but I want to write it)

4. Read some Harry/Draco post-HBP. Possibly to relate to #2 if I can untangle my mess of ideas.

5. Work out what the hell is going on in Rubies and try and finish it.

6. Ressurect my original fiction.

7. Find that notebook where I scribbled that fantastic slavery Viggorli fic outline.
aleathiel: (Default)
How bloody typical, after months hardly online due to studying I finally finish and for the next three days my internet is buggered. ARGH.

Anyway, I'm back now, and hopefully around much more! :) Did I miss anything fabulous over the weekend (I'll give up on the last couple of months of catching up, the only thing that's important is that if it was your birthday and I missed it then I'm very sorry).

On which note: Happy Belated Birthday, Ani. I'm so glad you're on my flist. :)

I just sat the last of my finals exams. Bleh. It was really hard but it's over now.

So, after I've slept for about a millenium, you will be getting fics from me.

I've almost decided (that is, my natural inclination is) to write a good meaty Harry/Draco for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_deja_vu, but I'm completely out of the loop on the fandom. While this is good, because hopefully it means I'll do something fresh, I don't really remember too much what's been going on, since I haven't read Half Blood Prince since it came out and I won't get my copy back until after the deadline. So, can anyone rec me some post-HBP Harry/Draco? Or general good post-HBP fics so that I can get my brain back into gear?

Also, yes, there are fics I intended to write/finish. Yes, it is entirely possible that if I ever have energy again I will finish them. And that goes for my original fiction too.
aleathiel: (Default)
My finals start tomorrow morning (it's almost 7pm now). My first exam is called Historical Argument and Practice and is essentially comprised of huge theoretical questions (Is an empire's ideology strongest at it's frontiers? Do all aspirant ethnic groups have a myth of descent?). So I've read AAHHHHH point and nothing I look at any more is going to make any difference.

So I'm going to go watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Which might well lead to my writing in the Harry Potter fandom for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_deja_vu, a fandom I haven't written in for three years.
