Random question to any scientists out there:

Aren't all your fingerprints meant to be the same?

Nine of mine are swirls that run off sideways like an upsidedown teardrop that's been squashed. But the ring finger on my right hand has concentric circles like the rings on a tree. I've been staring at them in all sorts of light, but it's definitely different, and definitely the only one.

Weird.

ETA: thanks to all of you who explained the mysteries of fingerprints to me!

No, they're all different, but unique to you. Hence why the police take all ten of them, not just one.

I have 3 types of pattern. 4 tree ring types..3 teardrops and 3 strange YingYang type patterns. So you're not wierd.

and you just made my husband ask me what was wrong with my hands cos I was staring so hard...

No, your fingerprints are unique to you, but the individual ones between your fingers are different. THey even vary side to side, i.e. your index fingers don't have to both be whorls.
So there you go.
