Apr. 23rd, 2004 08:16 amIf we go see Troy we have to go in a big group. And I am not sitting anywhere near you. There are two reasons for this - if I'm sitting next to you I won't be able to quell the slasher in me at all. Also, you bring out the critic in me. I want to enjoy Troy as what it is. I know that if I walk home from the cinema with you I'll end up tearing it to pieces.
If I'd gone with my sister I expect I'd have come out of Hidalgo with a more favourable review. But when I sit beside you I somehow get some of your 'film critic' hat. I don't want to be a critic of Troy, I want to be a groupie who gets swept away by the magic.
Normally I'm pretty critical anyway and so it's fine. The difference is I'm critical out of love, you're critical out of scorn.
This is one film I want to enjoy, even if it's not a good film.

Give the 6-yr-old a huge hug. I'm thrilled she liked it! I don't suppose there's much I've written on here that you can share with her!

Date: 2004-04-23 08:17 am (UTC)Touching the Void (beautiful documentary recreation of a climbing accident, which, even though you know the outcome right at the start, managed to build in tension as it went along).
Lost in Translation (a well-filmed experiment in possibilites and passed-up chances.
and those just from the past few months.
although the list of films i can criticise is much longertoo many complimentary words. needed my thesaurus!
