You asked for 'angsty Orlijah'. How could I resist!? I hope you have a happy day!
Lord of the Rings was a zenith. The zenith, to Elijah. How can he ever beat it? It hurts to think he’s reached his best at such a tender age. Because what’s the point in living any more? When he comes home he shuts himself away for months. He doesn’t want the world to see him, doesn’t want to see the world. Doesn’t want to see him.
Because Orlando’s star is in the ascendant. This was his springboard, his way of kicking down the door and announcing his arrival. And now his face is posted everywhere and he’s filming with Johnny Depp of all fucking people and of course Elijah’s jealous.
He paints a bright smile when they do publicity, year after year, and he comes out of hiding and works on films that nobody hears of or remembers and all the while Orlando is climbing out of reach. Orlando is Harrison Ford to his Mark Hamill. The one who’ll be remembered. Oh yeah, they’ll say one day. Orlando was the elf in Lord of the Rings, right back at the start of his career. He looked so young then, hadn’t matured into his roles. And who was that guy who played the hobbit? You know the one - big blue eyes…
And they’ll have to go on internet movie database to find out his name, and then grin at each other in recognition before forgetting it again.
He used to be the star.
He doesn’t regret Lord of the Rings. It was the most wonderful experience of his life. The place, the intensity, the people. Sometimes he and Dom reminisce, and Elijah wonders if their friendship is held together by thinly-disguised bitterness.
He cuts out articles about Orlando and saves them in a scrapbook, hoarding. He doesn’t take them out to look at them, because that would be indulgent. And Elijah will move on. It’s not like Orlando was the centre of his universe.
He was just vital enough to distort Elijah’s gravity.
They still get together, even ten years later, and Viggo’s hair is grey and Sean has five children and Orlando hasn’t changed. Except he has four bodyguards come with him to Elijah’s and stand around outside the house while they party. They get drunk, as usual and it isn’t until things begin to wind down and some of the crowd leave and others crash on the sofas that Elijah realises he’s lost sight of Orlando.
He wanders through his house, anger that Orlando would leave without saying goodbye festering in his chest. He slouches through the door to his bedroom, bitter with regrets.
Orlando is sitting on the floor in the centre of the room, Elijah’s clippings spread around him in untidy piles, and tears marring the perfect beauty of his famous face.

Oh, and that reminds me.
m_l_h, did you like your birthday present?

Beautiful line. Beautiful story. I love it. Nice ending; it kinda hurt. Lots of angst in there, which made me very happy, and of course I'm just incoherent right now due to joy. (Which is kinda disturbing; joy? Because of angst? Hmmm.) And I'm amazed that you were able to write it out so fast - kudos to you!
The only scary thing? I can really see that happening; Orlando moving on and forgetting and Elijah pushed to the side and ignored.
Thank you so much. It made my day. *hugs you*

Date: 2004-02-25 07:31 am (UTC)I wrote it it because I too could see it happening and it hurt to think that. I think the thing that hurts the most is Orlando's apparent obliviousness to what he's doing - which I tried to capture and twist at the end.
