I've just been reading an article in a historical journal about the necessity for medieval cavalry archers to dismount before shooting in order to have a solid base to draw against.

Obviously elves don't have this problem.

Nor the Rohirrim, apparently. They did lots of shooting from horseback.

But wouldn't it depend on the bow?

I'd have thought so. Obviously you couldn't handle a longbow on horseback, but I don't know about something small. The issue was the problem of leverage and having nothing to brace against on a moving horse.
