Farewell until the eleventh...

... and so I must tear myself away for this short while.
I'm going to France tomorrow and will be offline until I get back to University late on the 10th.
I'll do my best to catch up on my friends' pages as soon as possible when I get back, but if there is anything hugely important (oh, Orlando announcing his complete devoted love of Viggo, or whatever *wink*) then please leave me a message!!
And before I go, a bit of research:
I was talking to a friend of a friend last night, someone I know, but not well enough to call a friend. The only reason this is of significance is that the conversation will help me write Orlando.
This guy, Chris, was shot last year (he keeps hawks and was hunting with a friend who dropped a shotgun. It blasted right into the back of his knee) and was told the leg would have to be amputated and he would never walk again.
Only by complete chance did the eleven bullets in his leg miss the arteries and not kill him.
He was talking about how the experience (he can now walk again somewhat, after nine opps and a year and a half) has made him change. He talked about the feeling of living on borrowed time - chance - and the fact that he now feels he has to make something of his life, that he has to live life to the maximum because it's so easy to lose everything in a couple of seconds.
It made me stop and really think about what Orlando went through and how much that must have affected him. I mean, Chris was basically lazy through his A-levels, didn't work and is now determined to move on and get his life back. And it's not easy, he still has to go for X-rays all the time and has to cycle every day to try and rebuild the muscles in his leg.
It genuinely is something I've always left out when writing Orlando, because it seems to cliched. But now I'm beginning to think it's something that can't be ignored, even if he doesn't like to talk about it since it's so personal. I'm certainly going to be more aware of it when writing him now.
That's it. I just wanted to share these thoughts with you!
Have a great week!

Date: 2004-01-14 07:48 am (UTC)As you can see, lack of computer is killing me. I'm already back in our public computer room (avaliable to all Queens' people and only about a five min walk from my room, but still nothing remotely like having my darling laptop back). Can't wait til Sat!
