I know you are a bunch of fiction lovers, and I'd hazard a guess that a resonable number of you are history fans too.

So, I'm asking for your help. I'm writing an essay on fictional (novels, plays, film, poetry, whatever) portrayals of the Britons in Roman Britain, particularly to discussions of Hadrian's wall.

I'm not too interested in stories about Boudicca, and I know there are many of them.

Thanks, any recommendations would be gratefully received.

P.S. I started with Rosemary Sutcliff, so no need to mention Eagle of the Nineth and co.

Um. I know that Simon Scarrow wrote a series of mysteries set in Roman Briton, but more from a Roman perspective. Rosemary Rowe, too.

There's one - The Eagle and The Raven - dealing with Caractacus, by Pauline Gedge, but I think it's now out of print.

I'll have to look at the Simon Scarrow and Rosemary Rowe series. The Eagle and the Raven is too early anyway.

thanks!

*facepalms* And there's one called Island of Ghosts by Gillian Bradshaw, although it deals with Sarmatian troops stationed at the wall in the reign of Marcus Aurelius.

Gawd, I'm so uneducated (schooled in an arse-wash part of Wigan).
She's the bird off the 50 pence pieces, right?

*scratches arse and cracks open a tinnie*

Um, no, I think that would be Britannia.

I don't have any books to recommend but I wondered if the any of those you have been reading mentioned that there were actually two walls, Hadrian's Wall in the borders obviously, but also the Antonine wall, remmants of which can be found near Glasgow, kind of the northerm most outpost...

Yeah, I haven't yet found any fiction that mentions that, but obviously all the academic studies I've read do. I've decided to focus on this essay after a term's worth of work on the academic side of the argument, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for in the fiction and want to analyse whether or not I find it. It's a slightly odd angle to be looking at the study of ancient history, but modern reception has been an important part of our course, how influences such as the national curriculum alter the way Roman Britain is displayed in museums, for example.
