Can anyone tell me whether it is possible, in the UK, to get a copy of the DVD of Alexander that hasn't had the Alexander/Hephaestion cut the hell out of it?

The version I have does have the kiss with Bagoas and the getting into bed naked, but has lost the before battle chat with Hephaestion, "Stay with me tonight" and "You strike me still".

It must be possible to get the theatrical release, right?

EDIT: IMDB says the director's cut is eight minutes shorter than the theatrical release. And look what's been taken out. Fucking hell.

Huh? As far as I knew the dvd was the theatrical release!

Bugger ;(

Maybe. I was given the director's cut which, I have just discovered on IMDB is a cinematic first in that it runs 8 mins SHORTER than the theatrical release. It was a sensibly choice by the person who gave it to me, since the director's cut is usually the extended. In this case not.

And yes, it pisses me off the extreme that the director's cut should have some of the Hephaestion scenes cut.

I have the 2 disc (non director's cut) version but haven't had chance to see it yet it yet.

Meh, stupidness if you ask me could have done with a few less battles or rather slightly shorter battle scenes instead of cutting the Hepheastion scenes (and I'm not just saying that because I think Jared is pretty) as after a while I just switched off during the battle scenes, but everyone's different I suppose...

I think that's the version I need to get. Yes, I agree with regard to the battles. It's a badly editted film anyway, even if it has some good contents. Personally I'd have taken out some (or most) of the Anthony Hopkins bits. I didn't think they helped at all.

And it makes me angry because this version demotes Hephaestion's place in Alexander's life. I thought the theatrical version actually did a pretty good job of the relationship.

I didn't think the theatrical version was that bad actually (apart from Colin's wig & the previously mentiond overlong battle scenes). Of course I would have enjoyed A/H snoggage rather than just the lingering looks but like you said it did a good job with the relationship.

*kicks Oliver Stone/Studio whoever came up with this shorter version*

I didn't think it was bad at all either. There were things that irritated me - blatent inaccuracies. But for the most part I liked it since it included many little references to anecdotes in Alexander's life. And the battle of Gaugamela, while overly long, did actually do a pretty good version of showing Alexander's battle tactics. I can even live with the fact that, for dramatic tension, they changed the order of things at the end of his life (although I think it was unnecessary as it was dramatic enough). My main issues are the bad representation of the battle with the elephants (what's going on with the whole forest thing?) and the odd legends as cave paintings that makes no sense. By all means include the legends, they were central to Alexander's outlook, but as odd prehistorical artwork?

You're right... And as I said in the other comment, think that they cut the Hepheastion/Alexander scenes but added a longer scene about Alexander and Roxane! :P Ah!

I won't buy the director's cut 'cause I'm angry they deleted all those scenes... I think it was made for the critics about their love and all: indeed, it has instead an added scene, Alexander and Roxane fucking, longer than the theatrical's one. I have no words :P
I don't know if elsewhere it's possible to get it, but the dvd that came out here in Italy is the full version... it has some nice extras too about Hephaestion and his relationship with Alexander. I gave this links to many people on my flist that wanted the extras for this *points to icons*, so if you're interested and you don't find anything else you can look for that dvd here: http://www.dvd.it/page/welc/nlang/en/ :)

I was given it by someone who knows that I usually buy director's cuts rather than theatrical ones.

I didn't get as far as Roxane. I'd realised they'd cut Hephaestion scenes by that point.

I read how it was around so I didn't buy it, but I have to say I downloaded anyway the longer Roxane scene (colin fan here, it's not a bad scene, and it was around in some community, so ;)) but it's just the fact that they wanted to make him less gay or something, cutting Hephaestion from his life, and showing only that... it pissed me off!
As you said I like how things were in the theatrical one ^^ But well.

I bought my copy from a Danish website - the first menu is in Danish, but the rest is in English, and it has all the extras, and hasnt had all the good bits cut!! Just try ordering it from a foreign site!

Oh man. So there are versions out there with less Heph. Shit! Looks like I won't be buying the "extended" cut.

I know. Nowhere on the DVD does it say that it's actually an editted version of what was released...

IMO there wasn't enough Hephaestion in the original.

Well, okay, to be fair I thought they did a pretty good job with the relationship. But I wouldn't have complained about more Heph or more mansex.

Well I bought my copy here and it has all the scenes you're obviously missing :(

I think the problem is that I was given the director's cut. Usually a good decision, but not in this case it seems.

Could be. My copy is simply called "Special Edition", so I think it has those scenes *purrs happily*
Yeah well, if I can help you out with a copy, let me know :)
