I've been thinking, since Ani asked me what it was I liked about writing threesomes, quite what the appeal was to me. I've only just successfully pinned it down.

It isn't the threesome at all - I'm not particularly interested in three of my favourite guys together, oddly enough - what fascinates me is the dynamic that such a fic allows between the canon love interest and the fanon one.

I can point to many examples of this: Jack/Will/Elizabeth for example. Where the pairing that actually interests me is Jack/Elizabeth, but I can't divorce that from Jack/Will and Will/Elizabeth.

And it isn't only there. Obi-Wan/Anakin/Padme. Viggo/Orlando/Kate. What fascinates me is the creation of a dynamic that accepts that those two people don't belong together without the man that they both love. And yet still allows them to have sex. And at one level he doesn't have to be there. I want to write Sibylla with Godfrey and with Tiberias, for example.

I've played with writing this dynamic myself, but it's something I only very rarely get to read because so few other people do.

So: can anyone recommend me threesome fics (or pairings, where the central he isn't there) with this dynamic? Or does anyone just have an opinion to pass on it?

EDIT: Darling Razzle just wrote me Viggo/Orlando/Keira GUH!

Ooooh, god. I read something lovely with Orlando and Viggo and a female character ... I think? There's also a couple of good ones that I've read with Billy/Dom/Ali ... will look up links, see what I can find.

Oh, it would be wonderful if you found something. The only Viggo/Orlando/female fic that I've found that was any good (I am, of course, terrified of the dreaded MARY SUE) was [livejournal.com profile] _cee's She-verse fics. And they are lovely. The only other things I know of from this pairing are my own.

Hm, hm, I see. I mean, I can understand. And like I told you before, I can see the dynamic, too, it's not that I'm actually against threesomes at all. With me, it's more an OTP and general het-thing.

I just don't like to read graphic het, full stop. I'm all for het sex in rl, hey hey, but I don't know, I read slash only. There's no valid explanation. But I never said I wasn't weird, did I?

That doesn't mean I don't see, for instance, Obi-Wan/Anakin/Padmé and all the possibilities, espcially after reading the script draft. It's almost canon. Maybe curiousity would make me read it. But awww, the female sex thing... I just can't help it :(((((

All the power to you for being much more flexible than stuck up me.

Hehe, well at least the conversation with you made me think about it.

And no, I don't have a problem with reading het sex when it's done well. There are people who I would trust to read it from: abundantlyqueer and chaosmanor, for example. But it's not something I would mostly choose to read, as is rather obvious from my slashy tendencies. I think in part that comes from the fact that slash is usually better and more maturely written. It explores characters and situations so much better than het fics do because het fics have a tendency to degenerate into girlish fantasy. And I have no desire to read anything that involves one of our boys fucking a mary sue. I only like het fics when they do the same things that I like in slash.

And the problem with het fics is that they lack the essential thing that so defines slash: pretty men together. That said, the threesome thing does manage to accomplish both of these things.

Oh look, I've talked myself in a pretty circle. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I know what you mean, I'm essentially a slasher. But that I'm willing to read a bit of het fic in the right circumstances.

[livejournal.com profile] msilverstar wrote a Sean A./Christine/Elijah fic called Volcano. That's the only one that springs to mind.

Thanks. I vaguely think I might have read that before. How are you, by the way, I haven't talked to you for ages.

I wrote one in the Men of Myth series, Boromir/Aragorn, where the central He, Faramir, wasn't there. It was weird. They had to have a threesome afterwards so I could get over it. *g*

Of course! You did. There's the Aragorn/Eowyn part of the Shining One arc too. Where Faramir isn't there. I'd forgotten both of those.

yes, in case you were wondering, I do have my email set so that I hear it if it goes off when I'm studying. Five beeps, then I'm allowed to stop to read them. It's all about comprimises with yourself!

[livejournal.com profile] the_dala's "North and south of the river". Jack/Will/James and the amazing thing about this fic - except for making a threesome work, that is ;) - is that it made me fall in love with Will, a thing that I never thought possible :). It's very, very angsty, though, especially in the last part.

Erm. Re-read your post more thoroughly and I might have to say that Jack/James as well as Jack/Will accidentally seem to be filed as 'canon' in my brain, which they somehow... aren't :). So, I guess, J/W/J is not exactly what you were talking about, right? *sheepish smile*

Hehe! No, I know what you mean, but that doesn't stop me from wanting the read the fic. J/W/J sounds quite appealing really. I wrote it once, only as a drabble, because "my place is here, between you and Jack" was too good not to play with.

Yes, I'm not interested in threesomes per se, but I like James/Will/Elizabeth, because it seems like the best happy ending all around. I get the happy ending of James getting the girl he loves, with the canon pairing of Will/Elizabeth, and a lovely side order of slash into the bargain.

Though this is a pairing where the central character is a she of course.
