Fics with a mixed up chronology

1: This fic is f-locked. I'm really sorry. But I can't not include it in this post because it's the one that first took my breath away for using mixed chronology so stunningly EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow has given permission for this rec - approach her for permission to read the fic.
Falling Stars by [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow.

Orlando/Elijah. R.

This is the fic that is the best example I know of out of order chronology. I love the way you have no idea what's going on and then bits gradually fall into place. I love that there are fabulously unexpected bits in terms of characterisation as well, pushing back what you thought were pretty established boundaries.

Extract: Elijah ran his fingers through the stubble covering his head and over the ridge of his PAL implant, the feel of it beneath his skin was still unfamiliar. Sometimes it was hard to believe he'd really decided to exchange the small, safe bump of the regular comms implant, for the invasive wedge that was now part of his brain.

explanation of timeline, if you didn't get it. Don't read this until afterwards, if you need to

Viggorli. NC17 (also Sean A/Elijah)
The first part is good but, in my opinion, is just a long opening to the fantastic second part.

Viggo and Orlando take a road trip from Iowa to Florida. I don't want to say too much because it would ruin the way the fic unfolds.

Extract: Orli sleeps for a little more than an hour in the early afternoon. His head is to the side, his lips slightly parted, his hand lying loose on his knee. Viggo wants to reach out and touch him; he wants to have the right to do it, to lace their fingers on Orli's knee, and kiss Orli's knuckles if he wakes up. He doesn't have the right, and he doesn't do it.

Tennessee is the first slash fic I ever read. There was a link to it on the Viggo forum at IMDB and I innocently clicked, just to see what it was about. I was instantly hooked - I think I spent every free internet moment during the next three to four months just plowing through V/O archives. :D

Wow, I don't know why I feel such an awe, but I do. I remember my first bits of slash and can pretty much trace exactly how I ended up where I am now, via several fandoms and so on. Sometimes I post about fics that broke down barriers of things I thought I wouldn't read (RPS, incest etc)and it fascinates me to find out how other people were drawn in.

I find it interesting how people found the fandom too.

I didn't realize slash existed on the internet until LOTR. Sad, I know. I was hanging around the The One Ring messageboard at bit when FOTR came out and heard about The Very Secret Diaries. I was quite intrigued that anyone was writing things that even hinted at slashiness. Cassie Claire mentioned Aragorn/Legolas slash in her LJ, which prompted me to google "Tolkien slash". Which *cough* brought me to The Bagend Inn and MsA's links to the Beyond The Fellowship archive and the LOTR_RPS yahoo group. I don't think I stopped reading for two days.

It was amazing to realize that all this was out there when I'd been making up all these sorts of stories in my head for years.

I've just finished reading 'Tennesse', following your rec. Thanks for bringing it up, would have been a shame to miss it.

Reminds me a bit of one of Tricia's fics I came to like.

Yeah, that is a good one of Tricia's.

You're more than welcome. I'm thrilled people are reading the recs.

I haven't read Trisha's fic. I'll have to look at it.

Tricia Vegas wrote a few good fics early on. But then, speaking of wank, she was basically run out of LOTR_RPS with burning torches. Ah, those were the days.

Ah, I loved Chattanooga when I first read it - thanks for linking it here again (and for the link to the timeline, I recall being quite confused during my first read ;)).

I worked out the timeline while reading it, but it was still satisfying to read the note afterwards. Perhaps I saw it coming because different tenses is something I like to play with, so I recongnise it in other people's work. It's always there for a reason.

Chattanooga was the first RPS I ever read too. I'm sure it's responsible for my Viggorli fetish attraction. It's like a baby bird when it pecks it's way out of the shell and sees it's mother. I read other pairings, but nothing else is quite the same. Lol, thanks Cim.

It's funny you should say that, because I'm not sure if it's a first pairing thing. After all, it took my a while to find Viggorli. And even now I stray, but come back. I guess it's a nice cozy place to me when the fandom isn't split by some crappy and pointless wank. My first slash pairing was Draco/Harry.

It's only quite recently that I realized there was such a specific Orli/Viggo fandom. I'd always just sifted through Lotrips for my pairing. I can't say I never read other pairings, there've been fics I loved with either/or, but I always come back to this one.

And maybe it's because I'm just on the periphery, but this fandom doesn't seem as bad for wank as other places I've been. My introduction to fandom was through LOTR_RPS, the Andre Schneider yahoo group, and Datalounge so I've seen a lot of wank in my time. :D
