Oh look, it's Weds and I'm procrastinating again. It's getting to be such a bad habit! lol.

This week it's medieval lay literacy... I just can't be bothered...

Okay. Motivation. I will be back in two hours and will have done something productive by then. I promise.

Why is it taking such an incredibly long time to get anywhere with this essay?

More interestingly, I discovered this story yesterday while looking at stuff for the Sparta paper I'm studying.

In 378 a Spartan soldier called Sphodrias led an unauthorised attack on Piraeus. He was put to trial afterwards because he was not given permission for such an action and as such had disobeyed the state and faced execution. There was never any doubt that he was guilty, but he was let off because the King of Sparta, Agesilaos decided that Sphodrias was basically too good a person to face death even if he had broken the law. So Sphodrias was released and his bravery was praised.

However, when you look into this further it becomes more complex. It turns out that Sphodrias's son and Agesilaos's son were lovers.

I adore the idea that the king's son must have gone to his father to beg for the life of his lover's father. So totally romantic. And the fact that we will never know what actually happened all those thousands of years ago, or what became of the relationship between the boys makes it even more poigniant.

I'm sitting here plowing on with this essay, and as you do, I'm looking out the window.

It just inspired me to tell you how beautiful it is. It's a grey, cloudy, British, November day - that needs no further elaboration right?

The leaves have nearly all come off the trees in the grove outside my window, and I can see through them to the college moat. At the moment there are three swans on the water, and beyond them is the green where a group of boys are playing rugby. There are skeletal trees beyond them, and rising against the pale sky is the square Stalinist tower of the University Library. In the other direction is the river Cam and I can see through to the back of King's and the wide lawns.

I thought that once the leaves fell my view would become ugly, and was greatful for the grove being there. But actually, I like it just as much now!

*does happy dance*

Please don't remind me that everyone else has seen the EETTT and I can't for at least another two and a half weeks. That would just be cruel and take the edge of my current satisfaction with life.

...where I can find this fic?

It's pretty old, and was EW/OB (I think!). I'm pretty sure it used to be on Beyond the Fellowship, but I can't remember the author or the title (hey, if it was one of you - I'm really sorry - it's before I knew you!)
The few things I remember: Orlando had a girlfriend called Jo(?) in the early chapters. It had Atti, as Orlando's ocassional lover. I think it started at the end of a party, just as the others were leaving. Atti can't stay and so Jo decides that what Orlando needs is Elijah. By the end Jo is gone and Orli and Elijah are together.

That's as much as I remember though. Ring any bells for anyone? Like I said - it's OLD.
