Sir Ian McKellan is giving a talk to the Writers Guild here in Cambridge (wow am I glad I joined!?) on Thursday. Obviously, I am planning to go although unfortunately it did mean pulling out of my Matriculation Dinner. Sad, but it should be worth it, especially since it doesn't seem to have been very well advertised and no one seems to know so there may not be that many of us there.
More on Thursday...

Don't worry - am skipping the dinner!! It took some string pulling, but my tutor was really nice about it even though he didn't understand why I was going. Poor man teaches economics - I don't think he even knew who Ian McKellan is.

Jealous? This form the girl who met Elijah AND Dom?

My aim in the next three years is to get the Writers guild to get Viggo to come. I mean, they have frequent poetry readings...
it's worth a shot huh?

I am very excited by it. Especially by the fact that no one else seems interested in coming (uh..hello...people?????) so I might actually get the chance to talk to him.
The email was the weekly update from the guild listing all the events in the near future and all it said about Ian was:
blah...blah McKellan talk blah...
"You might have seen him in a Shakespeare play, or more likely in Lord of the Rings. There will be free drinks - that's got to be a good thing. Please come."

Um? Drinks? I'm sorry but is that not totally irrelevant? I'd happily pay to see Ian McKellan, you don't need to bribe me!!

Hehe what fun!!
But seriously, I shall endevour to get photos etc as well as an account of his talk. In interviews he always comes across as really interesting and friendly, but I don't want to be awkward if he doesnt want to do more than give the talk. I'll play it by ear.
I've been trying to think of things to ask him that aren't blatently obvious but show a geunine interest. I don't feel I can really ask him 'How many of the fellowship are gay?', tempting as it might be, hehe!! (not that he'd break their trust even if he knew, but still..)

Sadly I fear I don't have the guts. It will be interesting to see if sexuality comes up as a topic in his talk though. He said once that Hollywood is fully of people hiding in the cupboard afraid of ruining their images. I don't remember the exact quote but I remember thinking it seemed very barbed - as if aimed at someone in particular.
There is of course also his comment on the cast commentary of the EEDVD where he refers to Elijah and Sean as 'two very hetrosexual young men'. I'm expect that I can get away with questions about Frodo/Sam if not their counterparts...

Yeah. I think you better see how the talk goes, see if it could come up. Because it would be kinda strange if nothing like that is mentioned and then all of a sudden you go and ask about it.

Of course there will be a report. Now that I'm a student I'm getting quite good at lecture absorption (even though I'm not sure I'll take notes on Thurs - still undecided but there will certainly be a report!).

Thanks for the welcome, I have set aside a couple of hours tomorrow after my essay goes in (sigh. The essay I should currently be writing instead of on here!) in which to catch up on my friends' LJs and writing.

So you should be writting an essay and I should be doing the overseas returns! sense a pattern here?!?

Notes are unecessary if you have a good memory (I don't!) ;-)

I think there is a bad pattern. I mean they let me into Cambridge and I can't be ar*ed doing the work. I feel like I've been working forever. I mean needing a bit of LOTR-related love is entirely justified in my opinion!

*nod*

sounds reasonable to me - 'sides isn't it traditional for students to do sod all for the first year or so ?!? *eg*

Me not a good student which is why I have to go deliver my exam entry in person this afternoon as I managed to loose my form and the deadline is tomorrow! Luckily it's just round the corner from work.
