So I saw that film...

(behind a cut although not very spoilery)



I went in chanting "inspired by...inspired by..." to remind myself to forget the Illiad and watch it as a film. I didn't expect to succeed.

Amazingly I did. It probably helped that I hadn't been avoiding spoilers so I knew all the plot changes before seeing it. I expect I would have hated it if they'd been surprises. As it was, yeah it was a fairly enjoyable film with some very good-looking men in it.

The script had never met subtlety, someone ought to shoot the drummer and I did still have huge issues with the plot. But I didn't hate it. And there was so much slash potential...

The Hector-Achilles fight scene and the "let me wash his body" top my favourites list. ButI can't be bothered to list all the things I liked and disliked. It was probably the same as the things you liked and disliked.

But I do need to say: Eric Bana. He carried the film.

And Sean Bean was damn good too.

As to the fandom? It's weird, but I'm perfectly happy to ignore the film. Nice visuals but I'm willing to disregard the things I didn't like. No point in dwelling on them. Whether or not I stay in the Troy fandom depends on the fandom itself and what happens now, not on my disillusionment. As far as I'm concerned that was an entertaining way to spend my evening: a film about some people who happened to have the same names as characters we like to write about.

hehe, yeah I guess it was kind of democratic. Maybe because I've only just seen it and not really made up my mind fully.

It helped me a great deal to know the changes beforehand, so I could go to it thinking "this is a film with Sean Bean and Eric Bana in it." That was about the only expectation I had. *g*

The excellence of their performances made up for a lot of the problems.

Kill the drummer indeed...

It's a popcorn movie, a summer flick, not an artistic masterpiece. But in the realm of summer flicks, it is, like POTC, a success I think.

I left the film with a desire to read Achilles/Eudorus slash. *g* Vincent Regan's big blue eyes got to me.

I loved the Hector-Achilles fight, but that was the point at with the drums began to really annoy me.

I think it is a success. I'll watch it again. Especially now that it can't surprise me.

You won't get Achilles/Eudorus from me. I just thought he looked stoned. I was actually relieved that despite the whole cousin thing Patroclus was nicely slashy. (and I can't have been the only one who found it funny when he spoke with a deep voice...)

Regarding Eudorus's eyes, perhaps there is too much chlorine in the Aegean.

Did Brad's body look nice? *g* I really only noticed it when he was with Briseis, because they contrasted so nicely. Maybe if we had seen more shots of his back. I think I'm developing a back fetish.

One thing Petersen did right: he had the gals eat food and not exercise. He told them the super thin toned look was not in back then.

Hehe, I think I would have thought so had I not been so shocked and amused I didn't think of it. Poor Garrett, he just looked like a girl.

Yes, Brad's body was nice. I'd rather have seen more of Eric's and less of Brad's, but Brad's was nice. It was his shoulders I liked. The scene with Briseis when he lifted up her skirt and fit between her legs: she was white and he was tanned? Achilles trains naked? No tan lines.
Rose Byrne was good (I'm glad I was nice to her in my fics!) although I wasn't fond of her story arc, she did a nice understated job in comparison with all the 'epic' acting going on around her.

That sounded wrong: yes he probably did train naked - it just amused me that I noticed that in the film.

That is a sensible approach to take. Glad you enjoyed the movie for what it was :)
Could you tell me who the character was that should have died and was left alive please? I am a bit curious about it.

No fear there, I assure you Achilles dies: shot in the ankle by Paris's arrow (although in the chest a number of times too since they weren't going for the almost-immortal thing). And Hector dies - in fact actually gets the spear in the shoulder/neck like he's supposed to.
Menalaus dies too, which is a bit of a surprise.

It's probably just as well you don't want to see it, hon. Because you'd hate it for it's inaccuracies. Or complete inventions might be better.

I suppose if they let Paris live they'll have to kill Menelaus or else Paris can't stay with his Helen and live happily ever after. Pity they don't show Agamemnon's homecoming. Slaughtered in his bath, hacked to pieces by his loving wife *glee*
Let's hope that Wolfgang Petersen doesn't get it into his head to do the Odyssee as well, although I would probably see that if Bean gets a rerun as Odysseus.

Agamemnon's story was short and characatured really. He was THE VILLAIN, as it were.
