Yes I studied medieval history this year, but I don't know the answer to this, and more importantly I don't know where to look it up.
What do you call an earl's wife?
Count. Countess.
Duke. Duchess.
Lord. Lady.
Thegn. Lady.
Marquis. Marchioness.
Earl. ? (is it Lady?)
I don't suppose any of you have any ideas?
ETA: thanks to everyone who told me it was a countess, both in comments here and over the phone *grin*

Don't ask why I know, I have no clue myself.
Hope that helps!

got that from romance novels
I want it for a fic. Of the distinctly romance-novel variety, I'm afraid. But with fewer women.

Sounds good. What pairing would that be? ;)

It'll have an overall Viggo/Orlando bias. But that's because I can't deny my preference!

Any other hints about this fic? *G*

Um...nope! Partly because I've only got the outline worked out, and partly because there's one central thing about the fic I'm keeping secret. So yeah, that's a hint: there's something important I'm not saying about the fic. Just that it's ambitious (and I wonder if I'm insane to even try it!).
And it's psudo-medieval. Almost. If you squint at it sideways from the other side of the room.
