i neglected to mention that i only ever read the stuff from the 60s or something. yea. it was dramatic and gaspy and lots of fun. now i want to vomit when i see the romances out there. that's why slash is so much more appealing. it's got real conflicts between characters, not contrived ones for plot devices.
