They huddled together on the protruding rock, arms around each other as they waited for the inevitable end. The sky was black with smoke and soot coated their skin, their lips blistered and dry, their hair lank and filthy. Around them the lava flowed viscous as warm ice-cream, it’s harsh sulphurous odour filling their nostrils. Frodo shut his eyes and rested his head against Sam’s shoulder, tears of exhaustion leaving trails through the grime on his cheeks. There was relief it was over, but he could see no return journey. But if he died in Sam’s arms, he’d be happy.
