aleathielI very nearly didn't get to see him!! It was sooo packed. The door was shut when we got there and the porter wasn't about to let any more people in. Obviously I was really disappointed - especially since I pulled out of Matric Dinner to go - so I dawdled a bit outside. The windows were open although the curtains were closed and we could hear him so we stopped to listen.
After most of the people outside had gone, the porter came and told us he would open the door and we could stand behind the people at the back. So we did, and could see over people's shoulders.
After a bit he appologied that he was running longer than planned and that if anyone wanted to leave now was a good time. Quite a few people did go, so there was space for us properly standing at the back of the ten or so rows of seats.
I haven't written up what he said (which will be bits from memory I'm afraid), but I will do so and post them when I do. Which reminds me - can someone tell me how to put a cut in my LJ so that it's behind a link? You'd think after all this time I'd know how to do something that simple, but I don't.
Finally, just a few little things which will be repeated in the longer version:
He didn't talk about being Gandalf, just made a few minor references. I suspect he wanted people to talk more about his Shakespearean roles etc, which are of course what he is known for. He mentioned Orlando, because he was talking about having wanted to play Ned Kelly in the version in which the role eventually went to Mick Jagger, and he said he went to see new one because he 'likes Orlando'. There was a pause and then he said, 'I mean, he's a friend' and got quite a laugh from the audience.
Finally, only related in that it was Ian McKellen, and not something he said tonight, because as I said he didn't really talk about LOTR, but I was reading a few interviews with him before going and I read someone ask him about his comment about Sean and Elijah and the hand-holding in Rivendell. He replied that one of the reasons he said it was 'beacause I read internet speculation about Elijah's sexuality. So perhaps I was just trying to put thing straight by saying he was heterosexual, resolutely too. And Sean too.'
I just thought you might want to see that, even though it's not exactly related.
