I've never seen them as "evidence" of anything. Just a snapshot of a scene from my imagination. Right, I guess that expresses it better than I did. I meant the way we get all excited over something like the clip of Eric kissing Orlando. Not that is was real, as such, but that it teased us.
You mean by the act of writing RPS? Not really, I mean in the jokey way we talk. Maybe "construct arguments" is too strong. And I totally agree about the "real" thing. If I was given evidence there was actually something going on I'd stop writing. It would kill the fandom. Not only because it would take the fun out of slashing them, but because it would just be kind of icky. And I know there's a weird line to draw, but it's there: I can write Orlando fucking Kate if Viggo's there or something, because that isn't (IMO) ever how it would be. However I couldn't write a Kate/Orlando fic. That would be wrong. There's got to be something 'make believe' about it.
